How Cloud computing works:

Services labelled as “Cloud computing” will generally have the following characteristics:

• On-demand/self-service: the ability to sign up and have access to services immediately, without the long delays experienced with traditional IT.

• Resource optimization: costs are reduced based on resource sharing.

• Multi-channel network access: Cloud services can be available through all standard platforms.

• Measured service: Cloud services can be billed using meters and delivered as a utility service.

• Rapid elasticity: it is capable of scaling up to effectively cope with demand peaks.

SaaS:

Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software application delivered over the internet. It enables a provider to license a customer to use a service either in a pay-as- you-go or service-on-demand model. For a solution to be termed SaaS, it must adhere to the characteristics of Cloud computing. Defining characteristics of SaaS include: central location of software management, software delivered in a web, access to commercial software (“one to many” model), software patches and upgrades not handled by users, and Application Programming Interphases (APIs) between pieces of software to allow for integration. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is the most desired SaaS application.

PaaS:

Platform as a Service (PaaS) is generally used to refer to a technology specific platform that enables the creation of web applications easily and quickly without the difficulty of purchasing and managing the infrastructure and software underneath it. So, it’s different from SaaS in the sense that it is a platform used for the creation of the software made available over the web. PaaS is used in a situation where several developers will be working on development project or when external agents need to relate with the development process.

IaaS:

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) refers to the delivery of general computing infrastructure such as storage, servers, operating systems, and networks as on-demand services. With IaaS, resources can be purchased as outsourced services-on-demand instead of buying software, servers, network equipment, and data centers.

Moving to the Cloud:

In conclusion, Cloud computing is rapidly gaining ground within IT and is becoming the default method of information technology delivery. Therefore, organizations, from small-medium businesses to large enterprises, should consider starting a move to the Cloud sooner rather than later. Cloud computing has changed the manner in which information is accessed and stored.
